Chamber Music to Feed the soul
Robert Schumann's piano quintet, op. 44 is one of the most enjoyable pieces of 19th century chamber music in the literature. At once bold and poignant with beautiful lyrical melodies and strong harmonic statements. The piece is both simple and challenging. The piano and the strings interweave and play back and forth as a happy family. I have read that Schumann's wife Clara, considered this piece one of her favorite and peformed it regularly, even after Robert's death. I first heard this piece 30 years ago and love it as much today as I did on first hearing it. Now I am working on performing it myself.
