Roland de Lassus (1532-94) does not really need any introduction. He was simply the most versatile and widely respected musician of his day, capable of excelling in a wide range of styles and techniques: as well as producing an enormous body of church music he wrote many Italian madrigals, German Lieder and no less than one hundred and forty-eight chansons (eleven of these are incomplete).
