Musicland

I love the creative insect characters that elicit smiles from the very young and old alike. The rhythms are enchanting and my 6 year old loved creating her own - it boosted her self-esteem to already be creating her own compositions and also reenforced her writing development for school.

Cute pictures however...

I have been a private violin/viola teacher for over 5 years and purchased this book to teach a 5 year old student how to read music. I was attracted by the cute pictures of the bugs. However, upon arrival, I noticed that it doesn't seem to be written by a string teacher. I mainly use the Suzuki program but this book introduces the G and D strings at the very beginning. Crossing to lower strings is too difficult for young beginners. Also, there are other similar issues that lead me to question whether this book was written by a string player at all. However, I will keep using it because my student has been playing for almost a year and is ready for the lower strings. Also, I am just omitting parts of the book that seem unnecessarily difficult. P.S. I don't use this to teach violin, just as a supplement to the Suzuki method. I think next time (especially if the student is a little older) I'll use the Suzuki I Can Read Music book.
