Great tab- amazing CD

I started learning fingerpicking from the 'Blues and Ragtime' and 'Folk and Blues' books by Dave Van Ronk. I'm not sure if I could have picked up these John Hurt tunes without learning the different rythms from these previous books, as this book does not come with phrase by phrase lessons. I would recomend a book that includes lessons if you're just getting into intermediate level tunes. Besides that, I love the book, great songs, and I have more fun playing John Hurt than anything else I've learned.

If you want to play..... get the book!

If you like john hurts music and want to learn how to play it on the guitar this is the best way to learn. The tab is easy to read and damn... when I play these songs it sounds good. It also comes along with two great CD's.

Good Song selection but Tab hard to read

I got this book hoping to learn some great classic MJH songs. The song selections in this book are great as is the cd. But I have one major problem with this book. The Tab. The tab in this book is not printed like most modern day tab books. In most tab, the fret numbers lay centered on the staff which represents the strings of the guitar. In this book the notes are in the spaces between the lines which makes it difficult to figure out what fret and note you are supposed to play. If you are used to regular tab this will feel awkward. If you look at the tab for a bit you can figure it out, but if you are used to current day tab you will have to take some time to reorient youreself with the tab in this book. Now maybe this isnt a big deal for most, but for me, it made learning the songs a bit more difficult. All in all, a pretty good book, but fell short of my expectations.

Exceptional Artist: Exceptional Value

This instructional package earns the highest-possible marks because it unquestionably provides oustanding value for money. In addition to Grossman's strong transcription work, the book comes with 2 CDs of John Hurt himself playing the music -- CDs which you would expect to pay $15 each for retail. You really can't go wrong. Before you approach John Hurt's work, understand that it looks a lot easier on paper than it actually is. If you are a beginner or intermediate player, you will likely struggle at first with keeping the perfect alternating bass beat which is essential to making these songs work. Just keep at it!
