Mark Hayes: Carols for the Intermediate Pianist. (Seasonal Settings that Warm the Heart). By Mark Hayes. For piano. Sacred, Advent, Christmas. Intermediate. Published by Lorenz Publishing Company (LO.70-1621L).

Level 2 - Echoing the success of the first "Mark Hayes for the Intermediate Pianist," a collection of hymn settings, is this new collection of Christmas carols just in time for the Advent and Christmas season. Hayes has written creative, fresh settings of familiar carols that sound hard but are easily played by intermediate and advanced players alike. Special attention is given to smaller-handed pianists. . .no excessive use of octaves, no large leaps or chords, and thinner but satisfying harmonic textures. However, the trademark Hayes harmonies, modulations and embellishments are still there. Each arrangement is three minutes or shorter, making them perfect for use in services where timing is a consideration.

Nice Arrangements

This collection has a nice mixture of familiar and lesser known carols. Hayes' does a lovely job of harmonizing these songs, and they do not take long to prepare. A must for the busy church musician.

Love, love, love this book.

I like every song in this book and can play all of them. They are wonderful arrangements (much like the music of the past which wasn't so complicated but still had a rich sound). Also like the variety of styles.

Mark Hayes: Carols for the Intermediate Pianist

These carols are a little less known and there are some that I probably won't be playing as the congregation wouldn't even know they were for the Christmas season. Otherwise, they are easy enough to play and do sound melodious.
