Lord, Thou Hast Searched Me Psalm 139 by Howard Helvey 4-Part - Sheet Music
By Howard HelveyThe celebrated 17th century English author John Milton is known primarily for his later-career epic poetry. This paraphrase of Psalm 139:1-12, however, is one of his earliest documented workscomposed when the poet was only 15 years old. Here it is paired with Tender Thought, from the American folk tradition. This choral setting integrates much freely-composed material to prominently feature the violin and piano duo.

I was looking for a fresh setting of this text that my choir could learn quickly and found a recording of this piece on YouTube. Fortunately, it was readily available in print. The writing is lyrical and haunting, rendering the text memorable and profound. The choral parts are not difficult, but the meter is fluid and a couple of the choral entrances are tricky. The violin part requires a rather advanced and secure player. This was a piece I was glad to have the opportunity to buy and include in our worship service.
