This cantata belongs to the annual cycle "Musicalisches Lob Gottes in der Gemeine des Herrn" printed in 1744, from which the "Biblische Spruche" (see p. 12) are also taken. As with the choruses, in the arias Telemann allows for a great deal of freedom in the forces employed, whether with regard to the octave ranges of the voices, or the optional use of wind instruments doubling the strings. The allusions of the text to the coming sufferings of Jesus make this cantata suitable for use during Lent and Holy Week.
