Can't go wrong...

...with the Henle Vertag books! It amazes me how these scores compare to others I've seen/played that were printed by Schirmers. Schirmer has a lot more dynamic markings and even extra notes that don't appear in the Henle editions. As my coach pointed out, many of those notations are suggestions for improved understanding or possible ways of interpretation. I don't know; If the composer didn't include it in the score, I believe it should be left out, as Henle does. Nice big, black notes, easy to read.

By Far The Best Edition

If you have yet to use a Henle Urtext edition for Bach or Beethoven in particular, you do not know what you are missing. This is one of the most, if not the most, reliable, scholarly, and well laid out editions you can buy. Very much a worthwhile investment.

A pianist must have

I am a piano performance major and can easily say this is the best edition to get. Dover and others have mistakes and poor fingers. This edition is worth every penny and is one of the best investments you can make as a pianist. I recommend getting it covered and bound at a local store (ie copy shop) to make it last long.

The best

It is quite a big book of blue color. length 31 cm, width 24 cm. The price is good for book. The first band includes sonatas from 1st to 15th. The second band includes from 16th to 32.

Present for a serious piano college student

As I learned from my niece and her college professors, this is the most important book to learn from. My niece is determined to become a pianist (and has the talent for it, too.) Therefore, she wanted nothing but this book for Christmas for her studies, and she is very happy that I bought it.

wish it was paperpack

It's a great piece of work. The font in very legible and the binding makes it easy to use (as opposed to the very cheap Schrimer's library), but I do wishh it was hardbacked for longer life. It truly is a great investment though.

You get what you pay for...

Years ago I purchased the Henle edition of Beethoven Sonatas (both volumes). I already had two other editions. After becoming a performance major and after taking extensive seminars in performance and music editing, it became clear that some editions were simply not acceptable to learn and perform from for many reasons, not least of which is faithfulness to the music. Henle editions are engraved with more care and precision than any other editions available, making them by far the easiest to read. Henle’s integrity doesn’t end when you purchase the music. After finding a missing folio in the first volume of Beethoven Sonatas years after the purchase and simply notifying them, Henle replaced the entire volume for free. If you’re the sort of person who would rather look at an original Monet than a picture of that Monet scanned into an art history book and compressed into CMYK color format, you should really treat yourself to the real thing! Get G. Henle Verlag.

Simply the best!

For any serious musician, the Henle edition is simply the best. It is urtext, meaning that it contains exactly what Beethoven wrote, without the addition of some editor's speculations about how to improve Beethoven. This allows the pianist to decide for himself or herself how to interpret Beethoven's instructions. The only thing added is the fingerings, which are generally excellent. Now, for the non-serious musician, there are other editions available which are less expensive, such as the Dover edition. The Dover is not as good or authoritative as the Henle, but is still urtext and thus much better than the horrible Von Bulow edition from Schirmer, in which Von Bulow blithely changes or supplements Beethoven's instructions without alerting the pianist to any changes.

Buy to impress

This edition is "true" to the composer's original publication...if you're willing to settle for the very first printing of anything without any revisions or corrections, this publishing is for you. If you're planning on taking an exam in the near future I've heard examiners favour this publisher. If you're into NOT spending years filling in your own fingerings and interpretations do yourself a favour and purchase a more "thought-through" version, such as Dover or even Schirmer (although, Schirmer tends to be OVER analysed). It's a lot of money to spend for a very "bare-bones" piano book.

Not worth the price

Do not buy this, starving musicians! Buy the Dover edition. It has more explanations and is much cheaper. This edition is way overpriced! For students and teachers alike, the Dover edition is easy to read and very helpful.

High standard

I like this very much. It is øuite faithful to the composers writings and does not change anything, the slurs, frases, dynamics etc. Expencive but an investment for the musician who cares for the original thought of the music.
