Jazz, Rags & Blues-Book 3

Bought these for my students to get away from the standard classical style of playing. The 10 songs in this book have different style rhythms from blues,Jazz, and Ragtime. This book 3 has some very good syncopated rhythms, plus I have the students also add some improv. or change the note durations along with what is written to make the songs sound more lively. Songs in this series are pretty good as written. The Book 3 is easy to read and well organized. Songs are 1 or 2 pages in length. The songs are a series to get into pop/blues/Rag to learn basic syncopated rhythms. Book 3 is for the intermediate student throughout the book. All 5 Levels of this series are pretty good learning books. Variety of Blues, Jazz, and Ragtime songs from easy to the intermediate/advanced playing student. All the songs have very interesting styles to them. hope this helps. pianomanDT

Juvenille

The arrangements are bland and kitschy, but maybe that's because they seem geared for a younger crowd. For a true jazz lover, these pieces don't ring true. I had a hard time finding even arrangement that I enjoyed.

catchy tunes!!

Finally, intermediate pieces that are really for the intermediate player! You'll find these tunes enjoyable and will have them in your head as soon as you go through them once or twice. They are short songs, and most have only two themes. Plus, they're more pop music with a jazzy sound than rags or straight jazz. But you'll have fun with them. They use triplets in the base hand imaginatively. The book is also high quality, with readable notation; the pages stay flat, too. Ignore the odd fingering, of course.

GREAT ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS

I am very pleased with the choices of each style in this book and will order more of this composer's works. Except for the timing in the different styles, which are new to me, I felt the pieces were more EI than I to LI , but can't put this book down.

Uniformly Excellent

I was surprised to play through this book and find all the songs excellent examples of each musical style, and delightful compositions. It has been received with enthusiasm by my intermediate students.

Very melodious compositions

I like this composer enough to order 2 more of her books. The arrangements are easy to understand, yet sound nice and jazzy. I can play only what's written on the page so I appreciate interesting chord changes, etc.

Great for the Unconventional Student!

The books in this series have been great for me as a piano teacher. The songs are well-written and fun to play. The jazz harmonies and swing rhythms give the student exposure to musical elements not found in "classical" music, yet it's written in a way that piano students can understand. I've really enjoyed using all four levels of this series.
