Good selection for student

I bought this for my daughter and she loves it! She is a second year student and wanted something different than the school variety. Good buy!

Blues

The book has fine selected pieces. Since playalong is embeded with piano on left/right channell I would prefer to be played with saxophone and maybe fitted with some blues riffs and axplanation. Very correct book.

Great Collection

A great collection of solos that suit and are written for this instrument. Notes are not hard but the rhythms are more complicated, hence the intermediate rating. My student is stoked!

Good!

Is a very good book full of good jazzy songs in it. For beggining sax players its pretty good. And the mouth peice sint upside down it just is a different mouth peice than normal. I have the same one. It just looks different. But this is a good book

Arrangements make it unique

This is a good set of tunes and etudes for an intermediate player -- especially one that intends to play "combo" music in the future. Each tune is arranged; complete with intros, heads, transcribed solos (with changes), backgrounds behind rhythm solos, occasional shout choruses, and outtros. Simulates the kind of playing and the kind of charts and parts you'd see if you were hired for a 7-piece wedding or dance combo. Transcribed solos are generally representative of the swing era and very tasty.

Confused?

I lokked at this at Music and Arts today and "Yard Bird Suite" is a pitch higher. For instance, it starts in B when the Charlie Parker Omni Book starts in A ?

Kinda cheesy

for one the mouth piece on the cover is on up-side-down. you can also get the same tunes and more from The Definitive Jazz Collection at about the same price.

Highly Recommend

I am really enjoying this book. I am a beginning saxophone player, so some pieces are a challenge, which is good. I highly recommend this book.

Very fun book

I bought this book for my 11 year old and she was able to play Fever after two days of practice. However, it isn't for beginners. We had to search the internet for the meaning of some of the symbols because she hadn't learned them in class yet.

Good book.

Song choices are nice and easy to play and don't sound boring. Although on the front cover, the mouthpiece is upside down. I would reccommend this songbook.

Great song selections

The thing I like about this book is that it has some of the best-known jazz and standards, and I really enjoy playing them. The cd accompanyment is very rich with nice arrangements. A couple of the pieces are challenging, rythmically, but mostly the music is very playable, even for a beginner.

Fun book worth buying

Decent selection of songs with good accompanyment cd. Most songs allow opportunity to improvise, which is great. Better than Definitive Jazz Collection. Though fewer songs, the arrangements are more sophisticated and generally more fun to play.

Excellent book to learn Jazz

I have thoroughly enjoyed playing along with the CD that came with this book. The lead lines that are on the CD, may irritate a more advanced player, but personally it helped me in many ways. I would strongly recommend this book/CD.

buy The Definitive Jazz Collection

This book was okay and did have some good tunes but if you really want to have a good book get The Definitive Jazz Collection. It has all the songs in this book and about 50 more for the same price.

Good beginning challenge

I bought this book to start learing some of the classic jazz pieces. It is a lot of fun to play along with the CD; hearing the tunes helps with rhythm and phrasing. The written solos are helpful if you are just starting to improvise. The songs range from easy to challenging for the beginner (me). Some of the arrangements are cheesy (ie:Fever) but most are adequate or better. A note of interest, take a look at the sax mouthpiece on the cover.... Overall a good choice for the beginning player to challenge themselves.

don't buy it.

If you are into Jazz, this book does have some good songs, but honestly I was dissapointed when I bought the Definitive Jazz Collection, because it had the same songs as this book, and about twenty more that are good if not great for a dollar less. Don't waste your mony buy The definitive Jazz Collection instead of this book.

Wonderful book!

I bought this book right off this website, and I must admit, it's truly a wonderful book. It's a challenge to me because I don't completely understand the rules to jazz, but that is what makes this book fun for me. I go back to it just about everyday trying to understand the songs and play them like they are supposed to be played. I'm not the best Saxophone player in the world, but that's why I rate this as an intermediate. So far, the only song I know that I can play with full rhythm and stlye is Harlem Nocturne. Fly Me To The Moon is a ver close second.

Buy this book!

One of my favorite books with CD (I have over 100 books). The xylaphone cues are annoying, especially for recording, but the songs and arrangements are great. My favorite is Harlum Nocturne.

Gotta Love that Jazz!

A wonderful book! I just bought it at the local music store a couple weeks ago, and I am unable to put it down! It has a good mixture of Big Band and more modern Jazz, and you are bound to recognize at least one song in this book. Only thing I disliked, was the fact that on the acc. CD, it has this xylophone-thing playing the melody, and when you already know the melody and your CD player doesn't have a balance adjustment, it can get a little irritating... Overall, I give this book a thumbs up!
