Beautiful Example of Poulenc's Lyricism
I first heard this piece on a radio program featuring great pianists; the Intermezzo was the signature tune. I then found a recording by Artur Rubinstein, who plays it marvelously. Poulenc had a unique style of writing appealing melodies using unusual harmonic twists and modulations. To my ear, his style is easily distinguished from other French composers. Although much of Poulenc's output seems, at the first encounter, to be light-hearted and superficial, this piece combines cheerfulness and charm with introspection and melancholy. I thoroughly enjoy the work and highly recommend it.
