An original take on a tired form
I'm not typically a fan of "Theme and Variations," but this particular treatment of a familiar form is wonderful. Brahms takes a somewhat unorthodox "theme" and warps it into many truly exciting variations which manage to deviate strongly from the original while still preserving the basic harmonic structure.
