You learn play by playing fun and meaningful music. Uses lots of great songs at a beginner level so you are solid in your various picking patterns before you move on to the next level. This book got me playing and reading tabs in a matter of days, and CD helps a lot. A fun and quickly gratifying way t learn bluegrass banjo basics.

The best I've seen yet !
I started with the banjo 4 years ago, well, 9 books later( and a few CD's into the bargain too, this is the book that I'd recommend! It does exactly what every instruction book should- (But they don't). Increments are manageable, plenty of songs to practise new learning, and clearly explained. The CD is very helpful. The icing on the cake- It's probably the cheapest tutor around! Without this tutor, I may well have resigned my banjo to 'one of those things that I did but didn't do that well'. The 2nd book is as good- but there's no CD with it! This is THE banjo book for the beginner!
