This tune is associated with an old English custom that was observed at Christmas time. A large, decorated bowl of spiced ale was hoisted through town by a group of carolers in a tradition that has its roots in peasant festivals of the Middle Ages. The tune is therefore associated with Christmas revelry and joy. This arrangement for SATB quartet distributes the melodic material to all members of the group.
