Frederic Chopin – Ballades Piano Solo by Frederic Chopin Piano Solo - Sheet Music

By Frederic Chopin

In 1836 Chopin introduced the term "ballad" into piano music with the publication of his Ballad op. 23, although up to then it had only been used in literature and in vocal music. Indeed, all four of Chopin's ballads have the character of a dramatic story: the musical thread is spun with increasing tension throughout the work, reaching a powerful climax at the end. Following the "Preludes", we have now thoroughly re-evaluated this edition and revised it to include the latest scholarly findings. The most significant ones are documented in the printed critical apparatus; the detailed version can be downloaded from the Internet.

Disappointed in some new Henle changes

In the edition from the late 1970s, which is the one just prior to this, the score was laid out nicely and the notation was large enough. Footnotes and editor's explanations were at the back of the book, giving enough room for the actual music to be on the page. Now, with this newer version, the footnotes of the new editor (Mllemann) are at the bottom of each page. The score is slightly miniaturized on many lines in order to make room for the explanations at the bottom of each page. And yes, at the bottom of each and every page, which creates an annoyingly- squished score. I am frustrated when using this newer score and find myself instead preferring the 1970s version. I also am discovering in some newer recently-purchased Henle some other small changes that one would not expect from this publisher, such as slightly-lighter ink colour. The ink in some newer editions appears as dark grey, instead of the impressive rich dark black notation and staves of the preceding Henle editions.

Not thrilled with the new edition!

I dont like all the changes Henle has made to the third Ballade! I much prefer the original version. The same can be said of the revised Barcarolle not in this collection. Why would these new versions be released when pianists have been playing the originals for centuries now?

    Excellent!

I was waiting so excitingly for it, but I wasn't expecting all the scholar's work done around these four balades! This is a treasure!!

    Highly recommend

Beautiful, legible engraving on weighty, cream-colored paper. Pages open and will stay flat. Lots of extra details about origin of the urtext. Fast shipment.
