Down to the River to Pray-SATB
this was a very challenging piece for my students. We performed it without accompaniment, so each key change had to be memorized. Each verse, the harmonies are just enough different, that the students had to really concentrate throughout. The students LOVED the piece and were successful in their performance.

My Choir Enjoyed Singing this arrangement
We asked a local talent to come play the guitar for us. Rehearsal was simple and the congregation loved the piece. Did it for the Baptism of Jesus Sunday. We will use it again. Simple, yet nice harmonies and easy key changes.

great piece but can get monotonous
This piece was great! I loved the beginning, how it added the voices one by one, and the ending of the piece was interesting and had a good sound. The verses in between were a bit monotonous, with only one key change in the 5 verses. Once you get through them though, it is a good slow piece. As a gospel group we use it for our more conservative churches, and the performers enjoy it as much as the congregation.

Beautiful
What a wonderful arrangement of this song. Quiet and graceful all through the arrangement. I really recommend it! We are a mixed choir from Norway who is going to have a gospelconsert with one of Norway's best soul singers, Marianne Antonsen on November 9th 2008. Welcome! Down to the River to Pray
I listened to the MP3 clip prior to purchase and was impressed. When the music was rehearsed by our Church Choir, I was certainly not disappointed. Down to the River to Pray is a stunning item which we will be singing in our services and the concerts for a very long time.

Good communion song!
Our choir sang this for communion coming down the aisles of the church as they led communion. It was very emotional for the church and meant a lot.

My choir requests to practice it!
My choir members absolutely loved learning this song. They actually want to practice it. I'm not sure on the difficulty level because most of my choir has been reading music and singing parts for years. It is a beautiful sounding song.

Excellent for performing Acapella
Although it is not exactly the same as the Alison Krause version used in the movie, this is an excellent arrangement. A little tweaking by someone with a knowledgeable music background can make it match the movie version to a 'T'. We recently performed this as an Acapella arrangement to open an Gospel Sing fundraiser at our theatre. The audience was wholly into it from the opening solo line. Some of the timings may through you off a bit, as they are a bit different than what you hear on the radio, but overall, an excellent arrangement.

Church Choir
I purchased this for our Church Choir. wonderful song and took a little converting so all the instruments (or rather, instrument players) could play it. Other than that, no problems.

Breath of Fresh Air
We did this as a double quartet unaccompanied, using our lead soprano as a soloist for the beginning portion. It was extremely well received and was a good departure from the choral music we normally sing. It does not follow the sound track exactly from the movie, but easy enough to learn. I would definitely recommend this arrangement. Modulations were good and provided enough a nice "lift" where needed.

An Excellent Gospel Song
Our Pastor wanted our Baptist Men to sing Down to the River to Pray on Baptist Men's Day. Our church music staff worked with the men's chorus and the congregation gave an enthusatic round of applause after we sang the song for our special music on Baptist Men's day. Our music staff liked the arrangement very much and the music will be used again by our church choir. James Bumgardner

There's a better one out there!
This one's nice, butI have also sung the arrangement done by Philip Lawson for The King's Singers which is fantastic! It's a cappella (published by Hal Leonard)and very beautiful, ending with a single voice...

This is a wonderful, fun piece to sing. We sang it a cappella which made it more fun. We sang it for our church's 122th anniversary in a Southern Gospel choral performance setting.

Since hearing this on the "O Brother Where Art Thou?" soundtrack I have been enthralled about using this piece in our choral selection in our choir for Baptism and other type liturgical celebrations. Our choir director has gone bonkers and can't wait to use it. GREAT piece of old gospel music.
