Favorite Contemporary Piece
I am so glad this work was on a state syllabus. On the same level as Schimann's Scenes from Childhood, Circus Suite presents several scenes from a traveling Circus: the grand entrance, jugglers, the horseback rider, the trained dogs, the clowns, and the trapeze flyers. Finding good 20th century music can be challenging. This suite solves that challenge, giving the student satisfying music in the contemporary style. The unusual chords and dissonances make the work challenging to master. The rewarding result of the effort to learn it makes the work worth the effort.
