Rage and Sensuality embodied
This masterpiece combines Ravel at his most sensual, along with a pointed condemnation of colonialism from the point of view of the colonized. The writing is typically Ravellian: sensual, detailed and deft. The three songs bookend the story: the sensual "noble savage", enjoying the innocent love of his beautiful Nahandove, who resists the rapacity of the colonizer, and who then returns to his pre-industrial eden. The writing for piano, flute and cello expresses a sparse, yet colorful texture that highlights the rich text.
