The Key of C. like all the scales, has 7 modes, Many players and teachers use this key to learn about this material. I have taken the three modes LEAST like the major key itself, and then added the parent scale modes of these same three, with five sharps and five flats, to create a set of nine modal two-part Inventions. The Phrygian mode is based on the 3rd of a major scale. It has a lowered 2nd degree, and no 1/2 step leading-tone. The Mixolydian mode has no leading tone. The Locrian mode, a truly artificial and modern creation not related to the older church modes, has TWO half steps, between the first and second notes, and between the fourth and fifth degrees, giving it by far the least major-scale-sound flavor of the lot. So, three modal inventions, utilizing both familiar devices from the Baroque and modern elements, in various time signatures, tempos and moods, from each of three parent scales. Audio samples of each of the nine pieces are available to hear right on this site. If you like one or two, buy them as singles. If the entire set has appeal or use, buy this complete version and save 30%. Each piece is two pages, no page turns at all! Makes a great introduction to modern music, to contrapuntal playing, or supplemental material, even a great opener for a college-level recital. MBB.
