Composed by F. Guami. Recorder Duets, String Duets. Italian Instrumental Music of the Renaissance. Score. Published by Magnamusic Distributors Inc (MM.LPMIM03).

Francesco Guami was born in Lucca in about 1544, and died there in 1601 or 1602. He worked as a sackbut player at the court chapel in Munich from 1568 to 1580 under Lassus, and afterwards held the position of maestro di cappella in various places in Germany and Italy, finally returning to his birthplace in 1598. As a composer he seems to have been somewhat overshadowed by his more famous brother Gioseffo (a prolific composer of instrumental canzoni, madrigals and motets), but he did publish some books of madrigals as well as the duos found here. These rather demanding pieces are similar to the duos of Lassus in style and quality, especially in the way that they gradually build up to a rhythmic climax. - BT.
