This volume consists of a large number of branles of many different varieties, all very lively pieces. They include examples of the branle gay, the branle de Poitou, and the branle de Champagne. There are 53 pieces in all. ( the branle is a lively old dance in 4/4 time. Usually a country dance, popular in the Renaissance. The branle was danced by a group of many couples, some danced in a line and some in a circle.
