5 Virgil Motets - Score and parts
Composed by Josquin des Prez (1440-1521). Miscellaneous Music. Sacred. Score and Parts. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPM0551).
Item Number: MM.LPM0551
These five pieces are settings of two extracts from Virgil's Aeneid (Book IV). The two Josquin settings are printed after London, British Library, Royal MS 8 G VII. The remaining pieces are from the Chansonnier of Margaret of Austria, now in the Bibliotheque Royale in Brussels. These and other settings of the two Virgil texts are generally referred to as motets, but this is a little misleading, as for many people it implies a sacred text. But the style of the rmusic is halfway between that of contemporary chansons and that of motets proper. The two settings of Fame malum are related thematically. It is tempting to assume that Josquin's setting came first, but we do not have enough information about the chronology to confirm this. - BT.
