While at first glance this collection of studies appears to be designed to be ridiculously difficult only for the sake of being hard, a closer inspection shows them to be very well thought out, each focusing on a specific interval or challenge to horn playing that the horn player will face in the professional playing world. Only diligent practice will lead to mastery of these exercises. If one is able to play (or sing!) these with exactness of rhythmic and tonal integrity, it is likely that there is little he or she cannot technically perform on the instrument. If you would like a guide to accompany this study, Verne Reynolds' own Horn Handbook (which I highly recommend) details the problems in each etude, various goals to achieve, and his reasoning behind various aspects of each study.
