    Previn wrote these songs for Yo-Yo Ma and the soprano Sylvia McNair, hence the unusual combination. The Toni Morrison poems are beautiful and the settings by and large do them justice. The music is tonal but not easy to play rhythmically accurately or in tune. Interpretive problems include the...

    fact that three out of the four songs are slow in tempo. A significant but not easy collection.
