"This book demystifies the improvisation process. Most improv books use too much scale-based and tonal center oriented instruction whereas this one uses the approach that makes the most sense and creates the most inteligent sounding improvisations: chord tones (and their extensions) and consonance vs. dissonance. Mr. Berg carefully describes each chord type and how it is usually used in jazz tunes and then tells the student ways to improvise over that chord type. Throughout he describes standard jazz formulae and how "Goal Notes" can be surrounded by idiomatic jazz figures. This book describes how it is REALLY done!"
