"This (along with Volume 2 of course) is definitely the best possible collection of Beethoven's Sonatas at an amazingly inexpensive price. Do NOT buy any other editions! These pieces, though best reserved for the early advanced student, can be played by less experienced players with a lot of hard work. Trust me, I'm one of them :)"

"This is part one of the complete Piano Sonatas. With the works so well known, how to review? This volume contains number 8, Opus 13, "Pathetique", and number 14, Opus 27, #2, "Fantasia", commonly known as "Moonlight". The introduction is concise and provides a jump-off point if one wishes to pursue the various versions and histories of the sonatas, and briefly describes the editor Schenker. I haven't played in 20 years, so the fingering provided was not distracting, and on the whole helpful. I'll write back in a few years to advise on the quality of the binding (did they eventully fall apart, etc.)"

"These two volumes of Beethoven's sonatas are the least expensive, most compact way to access these works. This is helpful for me because I always travel and can carry these with me without weighing me down. Even though I own several other editions, I find these essential for the creative fingerings offered by the editor."

"Well edited and the binding doesn't fall apart, what more can you ask for? The music, that's what - Beethoven was one of the best composers to have ever lived, so it'd be a shame not to have this in one's collection."

"For anyone who can consider themselves a classical pianist, whether extremely serious or mildly serious, this book is a must-have. Do not consider any other edition! Teachers and pianists alike agree that none can compare to this one. No piano library can be complete without this book!"

"I started a piece that was illegible to me; this volume contained a much more readible and well edited version. Thank you! "

"I have made mistakes in ordering books in the past, but this was definately not a mistake. It is a great edition and the price was unbelievable. I have since ordered volume II."

"I'm not advanced but have always enjoyed challenges. These sonatas do the thing. Besides they are a joy to listen to as well." "

"This is one of the most inexpensive versions of the Beethoven sonatas available, yet it is truely one of the best ones! There are other good editions out there, but this one is a very good edition regardless of cost! I would highly recommend this edition to anyone who is a serious pianist - the Beethoven sonatas are part of an essential piano repertoire."

"After using the Dover Edition of the Beethoven Sonatas for well over a year, it has occured to me that this is the best playing edition there is for the afforesaid work. Not to mention the editor who was indeed one of the greatest musicologists, without whose insight this edition would not be able to fully express any more clearly the intentions (such as fingering ,phrasing & intended notes in the upper registers) of the Master - L.V.B. This is one book I'm proud to have in my Library or at the Piano."

"Excellent book. DO NOT buy Schirmer's edition, which is horrible..."

" I bought this book in May of 2004 and I've not regretted it. If you want a comprehensive edition at a good price, this is a book I strongly recommend. The printing is clear, Heinrich Schenker's fingering is-for the most part-easy to use (you can use your own, though), the pedal is Beethoven's own, and the prefaces are good pointers. Beethoven's sonatas 1-15 are more classical than his later sonatas but they are fine compositions for the late intermediate to advanced pianists. If you want a better edition, though, look into the Alfred edition of the sonatas 1-8."

"Playing a Beethoven sonata marks a ceratin point of achievement for the serious piano student and this is an excellent addition. Be aware that these are *for the most part* advanced works. Yes, there are some movements that would be suitable for a late-intermediate/ early advanced student, but overall, this is for the advancing piano student and requires work."

"As with all Beethoven's Work you can most definitely feel the power in his Piano Sonatas. The best Sonata i've ever come across is his 1st Piano Sonata which not many people know was dedicated to his(one of many)teacher, Joseph Haydn. Some of his sonatas are wild in a beautiful way but that's OK becuse Beethoven did'nt have a patron and his music didnot have to be polite!! I would also recommend VOL 2 of his Sonatas which contain his op.49 lite sonatas."
