"I would recommend getting abcs of violin bks 3 and 4 for introducing the positions, then do this one. makes more sense considering the level of difficulty in this book. Very good book though!"

"Pretty solid book for teaching 3rd and 5th position. Some fun songs like Merry Widow Waltz and Melody in F, but I think it's a little too much too fast. If you don;t know ANYTHING about 3rd position, I wouldn't recommend this. I think its more of an intermediate etude book."

"A very thorough introduction on how to move the hand and find the notes in the third position. Several pages of exercises are given before some well known compositions. I would like to see some very simple tunes given among the early, more serious exercises, as in most beginers guides to the first position. After a couple of years playing, I found I was still a beginner when making such a dramatic shift to the left hand position!"

"I agree with another reviewer: abcs of violin book 3 should be studied first, then this whistler book which is too advanced for a first timer to 3rd position!! "

"Simply the best book to start playing in third and fifth positions."

"detailed exercises. a must for intermediate players learning violin. but I started with abcs of violin book 3, it's less intimidating than this whistler book. I wouldn't have liked doing this book first. I recommend beginning with abcs of violin book 3 which introduces all four strings with exercises and familiar short pieces, then move ahead to this book. "This book is for the rank beginner, but still takes some studying to understand thoroughly. It is well written, and takes you through the various positions on the Violin. The successor to this book takes you through all the positions, including position 7, but should be read after book one. It's a good investment."

"I personally thought this book was great when I was learning the positions. However, without a teacher helping, I think this would not be a good book for those who teach themselves. This book is challenging, but when you complete a scale or solo, you really feel that you've accomplished something!"

"I spent a lot of time clowning around in violin class in the late 50's early 60's - apparently through many of the lessons in this book! Getting much more out of it this time around."

"After many years of NO practice and never having played scales, this was a great place to start up again. Notation is clear and progressive. Etudes are fundamentally interesting for the level of skill. I am having fun with the review and see changes in my playing, even at 65 years of age."

"Start out with ABC's of Violin book 3 which shows a basic and much easier way to understand third position for someone who has never learned the position. This Whistler Volume I is too hard in the beginning, but great as the next step after, for more reinforcement. "

"This book is not a self taught book. The student who understands shifting gets excellent practice in both techniques, plus intonation studies."
— J Wester from Yarmouth, Maine on November 12, 2006
"This is a nice book, however, it does not give any instructions on finger positions. No CD with it for learning so you can hear your notes to see if you are on the right pitch. I bought this book to LEARN the positions, but it is not one bit helpful. Maybe for someone who already knows the positions, it may be helpful, but surly not for beginning people who are wanting to learn."

"Although this is a complicated book, It is the best book for learning how to play in third position."
— Anonymous from Tampa, FL on August 6, 2006
"Terrific book for the student who is now ready to learn 3rd position. This can be used for any age, as it is slow and methodical, giving lots of needed reinforcement. It has 2 or 3 pages of exercises (half note values) in the position followed by shifting, scales (2 octave), short etudes, and even solos! "
