When I read the song list I was excited that I would be able to learn several old folk songs in the blue grass style. However, the banjo tab is written in the old (obsolete) tab style in which the notes are printed between the lines, making it unusable for...

banjo players used to the current banjo tab format. I am disappointed in the book, and I returned it. I will be watching for Mel Bay's promised reprinting in the current banjo tab format.

  • July 16, 2002 Just what I was looking for!

Another reviewer calls the arrangements "boring," but hey, the true beginner wants "boring"-- that is, simple arrangements which are easily mastered and which will help us beginners build speed and confidence. Also, for those of us who don't know how a given song goes, there's a pure melody...

tab (no fill notes) so the reader can learn the basic tune of a given song. I rate the book right up there with the best of them. No surprise to me it's still in print after all these years (originally published in 1978).

  • February 25, 2001 An OK collection of easy songs....

but the arrangements are boring... no variation in note timing (you like all eighth notes?). An impressive collection of tunes, but if you want to learn bluegrass, the Hal Leanord introductory books contain far better arrangements that are just as easy. The selections in this book should be easily played...

by any banjo student with a year of experience, and the melody notes are there if you wish to improve on the selections.
