Solo piano - SMP Level 5 (Intermediate)
Composed by Johann Friedrich Burgmuller (1806-1874). Edited by Willard A. Palmer. Masterworks; Piano Collection. Alfred Masterwork CD Edition. Classical Period and Studies. Collection and examples CD. Standard notation and fingerings (does not include words to the songs). 48 pages. Published by Alfred Music (AP.22524).

Item Number: AP.22524
ISBN 0739036890. With standard notation and fingerings (does not include words to the songs). Classical Period and Studies. 9x12 inches.

Burgmuller's most famous work, the 25 Progressive Pieces, are short compositions with descriptive titles. Easier than his Opp. 105 and 109, each selection exposes students to a different technical challenge with the main emphasis on the phrasing, articulation, and dynamics often found in Romantic piano music. The collection includes Arabesque and Ballade, both popular with many early-intermediate pianists. The Alfred Masterwork Library CD Editions conveniently combine each exceptional volume with a professionally recorded CD that is sure to inspire artistic performances.

This title has selections that range in difficulty from SMP Level 3-5.

  • April 30, 2011 A firm favourite!

This is a great book for early piano learning, I use it with nearly all my students after they've completed a couple of basic tutor books. The pieces are varied, giving a good introduction to different musical styles and piano techniques. Children really seem to like the sound of...

all of them, though "Ballade" is definitely the favourite. The CD is helpful for students who like to know how pieces sound before learning them, though the tempi on the CD are quite fast and fairly unachievable for the level at which most students learn these studies.

  • August 08, 2010 Great Book

These are wonderful, engaging pieces. They're full of feeling and movement and rather fun to play. Each piece is very distinctive. This book helped pull me out of a dry spell when I was trying to relearn piano after a two-year hiatus. I highly recommend it for anyone...

who likes music from the romantic period and/or who is working on developing their touch.
