Great edition, as I was hoping. High quality paper, nicely bound, clear print. Worth the price.

This opus is one of my favorites ever. It's just fantastic what Shostakovich is able to do. The pieces range from being playful and light to serene or villainous. The pages themselves are of noticeably incredible quality. I've heard it said that European paper is better than American...

paper, and that must be true because this book is of such great quality. Some of the articulations could be a little clearer, but this is still a wonderful book. Some of the pieces are difficult but others are simpler. Buy this book. The pieces are very well-done.

  • December 10, 2003 These Editions are Wonderful!!

Most musicians know that the editions of composers that are best are the ones that come from they're native country. The best Chopin editions are Polish, the best Scarlatti editions are Italian, the best Debussy editions are Italian, and this edition of Shostakovich are no different. They're incredibly...

expensive, but for a serious musician, they are more than worth it.

Opus 87 is my favorite piece by Shostakovich and I was so glad to get my hands on this gem of sheet music. Just from studying the 48 separate fugues and preludes included in both volumes, I have gained much insight into the way the whole work was put together...

. The print is clear, and there is no ambiguous marks I have found. Having said that I did have one concern. There were a couple parts where the use of a sustain pedal will obviously be needed because the music becomes physically impossible to play without it. I had to consult the recording I own of the work in order to hear how the pianist played in those instances. My problem is that there is no pedal markings on the music to let the musician know what to do. However, those parts are obvious and will require little deduction on the part of the reader. All in all I highly recomend this monumental collection of music for any fan of piano music and Shostakovich.
