  • January 07, 2013 Very Beautiful

I love Shostakovich and these pieces especially are lovely to listen to. Playing them is very difficult for most except for a few pieces. I would only purchase this title for the most advanced player with techinical facility. Many of the pieces are worth the challenge. They are so different...

and interesting to play. Tonally fascinating.

  • December 20, 2012 expensive score - horribly bound

This is review of the physical product - obviously this is one of the greatest piano works ever composed and I am currently learning my favorites. However, the publisher should be ashamed at asking good money for this edition. It is bound in such a way that it begins to fall...

apart within minutes of opening it for the first time. About a third of the book's pages have separated from the binding. The score is also printed quite condensed so that it is rather difficult to work with. Compare to the 70s MCA edition (if you can find one); I was looking at one today and after 40 years the binding is perfect. The score is also printed so that there is plenty of room for notes and fingering, etc. For example, the fugue no. 24 i n D minor takes of 8 very tightly packed pages in this DSCH edition. The same Fugue in the MCA edition is a comfy 12 pages.

  • February 26, 2012 A masterpiece

These preludes and fugues are among the masterpieces of the twentieth century. They aren't better known, I imagine, because many are deeply depressing -- they were written at the height of Stalinist repression, and some are intransigently inconsolable and bleak. Technically, some are extremely difficult, demanding the highest levels of...

technique (Shostakovich did this intentionally: see Mark Mazullo's wonderful book on the Preludes and Fugues). Luckily many are intermediate, and a few are easy. Among the saddest: fugue #8, prelude #14; prelude #19. There are also rare moments of happiness: fugue #7, for example.

  • February 18, 2012 Great music, terrible binding.

The music is wonderful, but the pages came apart almost from the beginning. I very easily separated all the pages from the binding and took them into a store specializing in mailing services and had them placed into a spiral binding for only a few dollars. Now I am happy...

    with my purchase!

  • September 10, 2011 Poor binding

Fugue XXIV immediately started to come apart from the binding, and soon it completely fell out of the booklet. This is very distressful.
