This collection of preludes in all major and minor keys contains a wealth of pedagogical challenges for the late intermediate to early advanced level student. Each prelude is designed to explore one or more pianistic problems, and serves as excellent preparatory repertoire for the more complex character pieces of the great masters of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The sounds of Bach, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Ravel, Gershwin, Prokofieff and Copland are echoed in the pieces in this collection. Dennis Alexander has recorded beautiful solo renditions of all 24 pieces on a correlated compact disc, which is packaged with each book in a convenient vinyl slip-pocket. The recordings are ideal for students to listen to at home for performance modeling and for quick teaching reference as you assign selections.
List/syllabus: Royal Conservatory List 2015.

  • March 24, 2013 great sound and well-supported

I am so impressed with how well-supported Dennis Alexander's work is. This book comes with CD and there is even more information on his website, including video demos of some of the songs. The music is beautiful and there is a lot of tempo and sound variety. The...

skill level is mostly beyond me, but i bought the book/CD anyway, for inspiration. I am an adult student, learning on my own, and have been playing for about a year. i would describe my current skill level as late beginner/early intermediate. i can play a few of the songs in this book "Melancholy Evening" and "Timeless" and can challenge myself with a few bars of the other pieces. The video on Dennis's website really shed some light on the intent of the collection and seeing/hearing it played makes things so much easier for a student at my level.
