20 Spanish Baroque Pieces by Gaspar Sanz (Arranged for Uke). Composed by Rob MacKillop. For Ukulele (Soprano). Saddle-stitched, Solos. Spanish. Intermediate. Book/CD Set. 40 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.22128BCD).

ISBN 9780786683321. Spanish. 8.75 x 11.75 inches.

Gaspar Sanz (1640 - 1710) is the most famous baroque-period guitarist. His works are tuneful and memorable, with fiery cross-rhythms and cascading scale passages. He published three books of guitar music.

The baroque guitar could be viewed as a close relative of the ukulele. Indeed, the two instruments have much in common. The smaller four-course guitar actually had the same tuning as the ukulele, for example, although it was largely double-strung.

Sanz enjoyed playing scales in the campanella style, with the notes of a scale set out on different strings, sonically overlapping slightly in the style of little bells. This is a technique the ukulele excels at, and is used to good effect in these arrangements.

Sanz' music for baroque guitar transfers exceptionally well to the uke, as these arrangements demonstrate. It is hoped that this repertoire will bring a refreshing addition to the repertoire of the ukulele, just as the little instrument can bring a freshness to these old but lively pieces.

Taken as minimal uke versions of baroque guitar pieces this book is not only fun but it brings the instrument to its peak of expressivity. My one criticism is that it is missing the rasgueado flourishes that make the original pieces so distinctive. This is something the uke can do...

, in fact, the re-entrant tuning of the ukulele would make it ideal. The Jacaras suffers from this deficiency but it isn't that one cannot extrapolate a basic chord structure from the tabulatura. So it might be missing the fire and range of the original but it isn't a fatal error. The folia and other quieter pieces come across strongly. I had no idea Rob Mckillop was so accomplished. I first encountered his YouTube vids a few years ago notably one on rasgueado technique. Speaking of the folia it's interesting to think that this version is a uke transcription based on a baroque guitar version of Corelli's violin/piano interpretation of a standard ground.

Many wonderful pieces here, and the accompanying CD is a nice addition. Nice use of the hammer on/off technique to give the pieces a really nice Spanish feel. Recommended for those who want a challenge. Definitely worth adding to your ukulele music collection!
