Excellent with Suzuki Trained Teacher
"The Suzuki repertoire books are meant to be used by the parent of the young child, who ideally is studying violin with a Suzuki trained teacher. The books are not given to the child to read, but are used as reference by the child's parent. The books are used in conjunction with the repertoire recordings that are available for sale as well. With the guidance of a Suzuki trained teacher, children learn the repertoire in the books easily and happily. The repertoire builds technique gradually while gently challenging the student. Dr. Suzuki's choice of repertoire is well thought out and musically satisfying. To learn more about the Suzuki philosophy, read Shinichi Suzuki's autobiography, "Nurtured by Love". "

Don't Discourage the Teacherless
"I live in a part of the country where there is no teacher. It would take 3 hours to drive to one, and I dont think that should be reason enough to s top me from learning to play the violin. But as for this book, it is only a suppliment. There is no sin in teaching yourself to play an instrument, afterall - who taught the original creator of the violin?"

Learn the Facts...
"The Suzuki Method is an ear training method originating in Japan. It is usually begun when the student is pre-school or early elementary age. Of course this book has nothing regarding note names, strings, etc. because the Suzuki teacher (YES you really do need a SUZUKI teacher to successfully master this method) is the one who teaches the music to the child. The child discovers music and plays by ear only-at first. Also, when a student is as young as 3 years old, do you expect him to read either words or notes? I began Suzuki at age 5, and studied Suzuki Violin (Vol. 1, for 1 year), and Suzuki piano (Vol. 1-4, from age 5-14). Now I am planning on majoring in piano performance this coming year as a freshman in college. I highly recommend this book in any of the Cello, Viola, Piano or Violin methods. It is great foundational preparation to nurture a musical passion, hobby, or career. (Also, you may want to check out the book, Nurtured by Love, by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki)."

ONLY SHOULD USE AS A SUPPLEMENT!
"This book is awful for anyone who would try and teach themselves. So DON'T BUY IT if that is your goal. If you plan on using a teacher please find one that only uses this book as a supplement to a teaching method that actually covers, note reading, theory, rhythm, etc. Fun for songs but that is it!"

Save your Money if you are a beginner>
"Not for a beginner. The Cd starts right off, no pause between the different variations of Twinkle, twinkle little star. The finger positions are not explained or notes time signature or anything else. "

this bk and abc's of violin good fit
"agree with previous review. My son's teacher recommends this suzuki book 1 and abc's of violin bk 1. He is having a lot of fun with both. Similar techniques and a lot of songs to practice. I had very little prior music knowledge to begin with but 'am understanding more each week with help of these good books and a fine teacher."

great with a supplement
"I've been using this Suzuki bk 1 with the ABC's of Violin bk 1 for years with my students. Both work extremely well together. The Suzuki has the popular Bach minuets and other nice melodies while the ABC's has twice as many melodies including classical, fiddle and folk plus many excellent warmup exercises. My students learn to read well with the ABC's of Violin. All of the Suzuki books need a supplementary method book for reading."

Best Book
"As a music teacher, I always prefer that students take lessons with a real teacher, not try to learn on their own. If students are taking lessons with a teacher who is familiar with the Suzuki method, this is an excellent book. It is not a very friendly "teach yourself" book, but I really don't recommend that any student attempt this -- there are too many possible problems. This book is a classic, and I use it with all of my beginning violin students. They have great success with it."

Useless to beginners
"I've been studying all sorts of instrumental methods for quite a while. I found this one on a bargain table and started looking through it. After I got done I looked at the cover and choked back a scream as I saw the text "volume 1". WHAT? This book teaches absolutely no theory or note names on the staff. First you learn to hold the violin and bow. Now, lets bow 16th notes on 2 different strings. Yuck! 15-20 exercises and nothing to prepare you for the first one. Pathetic. I reccommed either Essential Elements 2000 for Strings, All for Strings, Strictly Strings... what the heck, anything is better!!"

Disappointing
"Disappointing. The book assumed the fledgling violinist knew how to tune the instrument. Accordingly, the recipient of this book has not been able to use it."

This book is great!
"This book is good for 1st or 2nd years. I've been playing the violin for a year. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Lighty Row are the best songs. I don't think I would of gotten into that book without my teacher, Mrs. Rush. "

A Great book for easy classics
"I started playing violin at age 22 with this book, and have also taught it to 2 students: an adult, and a teen, both of whom were Level 6 (Alfred Basic Piano Library) piano students of mine. It worked well for myself and my two students, because we can read music well. I suppose that it can work for different ages/abilities, but I like to teach All for Strings, book 1 to beginning musicians, then Suzuki Volume 1 as a second book, (followed by levels 2, 3, etc...) (The All for Strings book starts out with letter names only, and has shorter pieces, and so is a little easier that the Suzuki book.) I rated this as early intermediate to reflect the skill level at the end of the book."

A great "teacher" for beginners
"This book is a great starter for those who can't play the violin really well, or at all. It teaches a lot of the basics and is really helpful. I reccomend this book. The songs are also pretty interesting."
