  • September 08, 2008 More Jazz & Be-Bop then Blues

I was hoping for some cool patterns and turnarounds, but This book is filled with very complex jazz chords, most songs sound far too similar to each other, I was hoping for some more roots and blues progressions and a variety of licks and turnarounds, other books are much more...

useful like Keith Wyatt's "Acoustic Blues Guitar"

  • March 27, 2007 Clear, Well-Written Guide to Playing the Blues

Aimed at the early-intermediate to intermediate+ student of the blues on guitar, Dave Rubin's book appears to cover all the bases, in some 23+ chapters, from Slow to Swinging, Boogie Shuffles, Chicago-style, Minor, Jazzy and Bebop Blues, along with Turnarounds, Intros and Soloing. There is also an...

interesting chapter on the Origin of the 12-bar blues. The lessons are thorough yet succinct and clearly explained, and the accompanying CD is very helpful, especially in giving the regular-speed version along with a slowed-down version of each riff. All the music includes traditional as well as tablature notation schemes, with chords listed above the measures. (There's also a chapter at the end describing tab.) All in all, as a lover of blues and jazz and a student of guitar for more than five years, I would recommend this book highly for anyone wishing to gain a thorough grounding in the blues.
