Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959)
Heitor Villa-Lobos, the most important Brazilian composer, in his lifetime considered the greatest composer of the Americas, wrote about 1,000 pieces. His importance resides in one particular fact, among others: he reformulated the concept of musical nationalism, and became its greatest exponent. It was because of Villa-Lobos that Brazilian music became known in other countries, eventually becoming universal in appeal.
