In music, the term "bluegrass" describes the hot string-band style pioneered by Kentuckian Bill Monroe, which blends old-time country music with blues rhythms and jazz-influenced improvisation. This book contains 101 authentic bluegrass mandolin licks in the favorite bluegrass keys of C, G, D, and A minor written in notation and tablature. The licks are broken down into phrases of two, four, and eight bars. In addition, several endings and crosspicking licks are included. Each lick is played to a chord progression that is standard in bluegrass, country, and folk music. All 101 examples are recorded on the companion CD with guitar accompaniment at a moderate tempo. Whether you are a fan of old-time country music, traditional bluegrass, or newgrass, you are sure to find lots of great ideas in this new collection of bluegrass licks. So, grab your instrument, put on the CD, pull up a chair, and let's start pickin'.

The title Red Hot Licks is very misleading. Very basic. Fine for someone that is not only new to mandolin but that is new to playing an instrument at all.

great material

This book is very helpful in learning scales and solos. I found many of the licks to be useful in many bluegrass songs that i play. It eaven comes with a cd to help you along.

Good exercise

If you are looking for great solos and awesome licks, this book isn't really what you need. What this book is good for is helping people to understand scale/chord relationships. What this book is designed for is to give an early intermediate a skeletal framework of licks. To be honest...

Superb book for early intermediate

The prior reviewer is judging this book as though it was written for advanced players, but that is unfair. The book is clearly designed for the early intermediate player and is marketed as such on the Mel Bay website. As a teacher, I have seen many students benefit from this...

Red Hot Not

This product left a lot to be desired. Red Hot..... please. I found the majority of the solos and turnarounds boring at best. I was very dissapointed.
