Here's a strong, driving work that will make a nice opener at your next performance. Set in an E minor/modal key, all the notes are familiar so you can concentrate on teaching music, not just the notes!.
Eclipsys is roughly two minutes of pure excitement for young string orchestra. It is a great way to begin or end any concert. The music is set in minor featuring lots of energy and rhythmic verve. The title came from a sign I saw on the streets of Boston. It brought about some vivid musical images that I incorporated into this piece. The music starts out with the main melody presented in unison accompanied by hits in the low voices and percussion. The melody becomes a little more sophisticated at m. 9 by the addition of harmony and a bass line. Violin II and Viola give us a clean presentation of the melody at m. 21. This leads into more development at m. 29. The alternation between the upper and lower voices at m.45 provides an interesting hocket of the melodic line. One final presentation at m. 55 allows the ensemble to play with a good, full sound. Melodic fragments at m. 63 give the piece a sense of completion as it drives towards the final chord.Eclipsys was written to allow you to teach important musical concepts, while at the same time providing entertainment for you, your students, and your audience.
