Detailed Description

Alma Redemptoris Mater - Score and parts composed by Johannes Ockeghem (1410-1497). For SATB voices; or SATB instruments. Miscellaneous Music. Choral or Vocal Music. Score and Parts. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPM0514).

One of the finest treatments of the ever popular Marian Antiphon. Ockeghem's Alma Redemptoris Mater survives in two sources, Rome, Vatican Library, Cappella Sistina 46 (the source for the present edition), where the composer is given only as "Jo. . . ", and Florence, Biblioteca Riccardiana, MS 2794, in which the piece is marked "De Ockeghem". The plainsong melody used here was very popular with fifteenth-century composers, with settings by Dufay, Josquin and others. In Ockeghem's version the melody is present, subject to much decoration, in the contratenor part.
