'Estudios Criollos': Five Concert Etudes for solo clarinet composed by Daniel Cueto. For Clarinet. 21st Century, World, Latin. Advanced. Published by Daniel Cueto (S0.16927).
'Representative of the South American style, these etudes should be in the repertoire of every North American clarinetist' -Dr. Cecil Gold The following etudes will offer a stimulating challenge to clarinet students and professionals around the world. They can be played on clarinets of all sizes, and are suited for individual study as well as for performance in recitals, concerts and competitions. Their pedagogic value is threefold; on a technical level, they will help achieve proficiency in a variety of articulations, dynamics, and leaps throughout the range of the instrument. Furthermore, the reading and assimilation of tricky rhythms, the conscious differentiation of melodic and harmonic elements, and the contrasts in musical character will play a part in the development of a sensible musicianship. Also, the Estudios offer ethnomusicological insight; based on traditional genres from the coast of Peru, with a unique mix of European, African and Native American musical influences, they represent a fascinating artistic tradition still largely unknown to many musicians and concertgoers around the globe. As pieces for concert and competition performance, the Estudios offer many possibilities. They may be performed all together in the given order (as a single 'Suite'), or as individual movements spread out through a recital. Each etude also works perfectly well on its own (the first one, for example, is great as an encore after a solo recital or concert), and many further combinations are possible (Examples: II. + III. / I. + IV. + V. / IV. + III. / etc.). The tempo markings are suggestions, and by no means dogmatic. Dynamics and articulation may also be added or modified according to the preference and judgment of each player.
