Composed in 2012 in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. "When Johnny" is based on the tune of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," a popular song sung by both sides during the American Civil War that expressed people's longing for the return of their friends and relatives who were fighting in the war. The tune is heard in full in the middle of this piece, while fragments of the tune are tossed around and played with during the introduction and coda.
