Miss Saigon was first produced on London's West End in 1999. Composers Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonenberg, fresh from the success of their musical Les Miserables, conceived this tale of an America GI and his Vietnamese lover as a modern adaptation of Puccini's Madame Butterfly. The musical had long and successful runs both in London and on Broadway, where it opened in 1991 and ran for 4,092 perfomances.
