If this missa brevis had been intended to be sung in the so-called "Rorate" offices, the Credo should habe been omitted; the Sunday masses, on the other hand, made provision for the Credo but not for the Gloria. Haydn, who had composed for all of the items of the Ordinary, probably gave consideration to both possibilities.
