The Art of Darkness arranged by James Miley. For big band. Medium to difficult. Score and parts. Published by Walrus Music Publishing (WA.51600).
The chart that won James the prestigious IAJE/Gil Evans Fellowship, "Darkness" is a straight 8 cut-time funk extravanganza with extended solo space for tenor, drums, guitar/pano, and trumpet. The piece moves from cut-time funk to open-ended weather report-esque (think Jaco) solo sections, a drum feature supported by wildly angular unison rhythm lines, a laid-back guitar/piano solo for a bit of a breather, and finally conclueds with an unexpected swing/metal romp to the end. Requires a sophisticated rhythm section, a strong guitarist with a love of melody and a knack for power chords, and advanced soloists all around. Alto 1 doubles soprano. 5,4,4,G,P,B,D.
