3 Ricercari Sopra Canto Fermo (La Spagna) - Score and parts composed by Mayone. For 3 viols/strings/winds. String Trios, Miscellaneous Music. Italian Instrumental Music of the Renaissance. Score and Parts. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPMIM14).
These three pieces come from Mayones Primo libra di ricercari a tre voci /Di Ascanio Maione Napolitano, Organista, published in Naples in 1606. Mayones pieces are based on the old La Spagna melody, which started life as a fifteenth-century basse danse tune. Ascanio Mayone (c.1565-1627) seems to have spent his whole life in Naples. His is known today principally for some rather innovative keyboard music; together with his fellow-Neapolitan Giovanni Maria Trabaci, he developed a kind of free, harmonically expressive music that today we associate more with the rather younger Girolamo Frescobaldi. -BT.
