About Arvo Part

(b. 1935) 20th Century music – Estonia

Part is a composer of classical and sacred music. His compositions are generally divided into two periods. His early works were composed in a neo-classical style and influenced by Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Bartok. Since the 1970s, Part composed in a minimalist style, using a self-invented technique called tintinnabuli, which he describes as the ringing of bells. Music from this period is characterized by simple triadic harmonies, simple rhythm, and lack of tempo changes. Many of his later works are frequently set to sacred texts. It is the music from this later period that has earned him the most popularity, especially Fratres, Spiegel Im Spiegel and Tabula Rasa. He also wrote several important sacred choral works.
