About Arcangelo Corelli

(1653-1713) Baroque Period – Italy

Corelli’s contributions to music came in three forms: as a violinist, teacher and composer. In the 17th century, the violin was a relatively new instrument (the viol family being in more prominent use). He gave concert tours throughout Europe, which led to the popularization of the instrument. In addition, Corelli is credited with developing basic violin technique. Antonio Vivaldi was among his students. As a composer, Corelli has 48 trio sonatas, 12 violin sonatas, and 12 concerto grossi to his credit.
